Portamento in Max MSP

I was looking for a way to do this and couldn’t much that was helpful so I am sticking this here to help me and hopefully others.

Background: I was looking for a way to add portamento (AKA glide) to a little synth I am building in Max, I am no Max ninja and I don’t know my way around as well as I would like, so after a bit of googling I was left looking at trying to implement something clunky with the line object and again not knowing the objects well enough this was proving harder than I would like. I started thinking ‘Maybe I should try a 1st order filter, that is basically what a slew gate/lag processor on a real analogue modular synth is right?’

Anyway, long story short, I went and had a poke around the help again I found the rampsmooth~ object which is a signal level smoothing processor, perfect!

Here is quick demo to paste into max

There may well be better ways to do this, so if you know of any chime in in the comments!
